THE TWILIGHT ZONE of Blogging

Alright, my air's broken.
It was one of those moments where Mr. Wonderful and I (or is that me and Mr. Wonderful? Thank God for editors!) were sitting on the sofa watching the Tour de France and we heard this strange popping noise. Something akin to a bang, bang, bang. To cops and robbers. To fireworks. To living in the rural south around people who don't believe in strangers pulling up in the driveway in the middle of the night. Now - where was I? Oh yes, the popping noise, and so we take immediate action and look at one another and say, "What the heck was that?"
You know how you do. Like the person your asking could say, "Why honey, that's meteor number 3742389.2 headed straight over our house and it's about to land in the Kroger parking lot with a noise much louder than that one." But no, nobody can tell you what the mystery noise is but we always ask anyway. So we ask each other the question and then Mr. Wonderful gets up off the sofa (while I continue watching the final stages of the race - hence, his name) and goes outside, that is the front door, to investigate. He comes back in shortly and seems perpeplexed as there is no explanation. Well, little did we know that out the BACKDOOR the AC unit was smoking furiously and threatning to catch on fire. Well, NOW we know because I'm sitting here writing in my underwear with sweat pouring down my back and I DON'T SWEAT.
So, if you wonder where the heck I've been, why no blogging, no communication, no words from the dark screen, well, among other things like all my altruistic efforts for world peace, education, saving the earth, the seals, the polar bears, old people, young people, and people in between, all sandwiched neatly between 24 hour marathons of lying on the sofa doing nothing but watching the old TWILIGHT ZONE series - I happen to have been accomplishing a lot of stuff. Like, I've been calling Mama everyday, slugging groceries up and down the stairs, running errands, doing laundry (okay, okay - not doing the laundry very well because it's piling up around my ankles!) walking the dog, feeding the cat, calling xyz company for the 13th time to tell them you did not order and thingimagig and to please take that charge off your card, and then needing to lay down and take a nap from the headache of dealing with all that - you know the drill. All the crazy things your doing too including getting your laundry washed, dried - AND PUT AWAY and keeping your floor mopped.
And on top of all that really important stuff I've been kicking off BackStory on the radio and having a BLAST talking to authors like Daniel Wallace http://www.danielwallace.org/, Charles McNair, Kim Ponders http://www.kimponders.com/, Janis Owens http://www.janisowens.com/, Michael Morris http://www.michaelmorrisbooks.com/, Zinta Aistars, editor of The Smoking Poet literary ezine and community http://www.thesmokingpoet.tripod.com and my southern playwright buddy genius, Waylon Wood among many others. We get to talk about the real deal that goes on in the writers life. You know, like instead of looking out over the Italian Countryside as I write these words that I'm really half nekked, sweaty, and surrounded by laundry and an ever growing to do list. However, if you like good writing, good music, and good stories, and have access to a radio - in Nashville or by way of the internet anywhere in the world - tune in to BackStory at 4pm central on http://www.radiofreenashville.org/ I promise you'll have a good time. Really. J. Brooks Dann will be guesting on BACKSTORY this Saturday, July 28. Not only is he talented but he is an entertaining character as well. After all, he walked away with the award as Timber King at the Pulpwood Queens Annual Ball and I was there to witness it all! This is his crowning moment! You can find out much, much, more about the author at http://www.jbrooksdann.com/
Oh yeah, one more thing. There is this little fiction book that I'm wrapping up and it's all about, well - you'll see very soon. This I'll tell you, if you don't see me here, it's because I'm just over there, in that little town where these people are hanging out and inviting me to just hush up and watch and listen. Fans of The Gin Girl are going to love elements of new novel and fans of The Messenger of Magnolia Street are going to find the familiar here as well. It's a strange and lovely cross between contemporary culture and the old rural south, and there are just some GREAT folks and ornery characters here that I can't wait for you to meet! Oh, that's right, there's just the right amount of strangeness and wonder in between the pages as well so don't despair those who have been waiting on the next southern mystical adventure.
Now, what is going on with you? Email me and let me hear from you out there in that big, wonderful, sloppy old world of ours. It's like the line from Desiderata "With all it's sham and drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world."
And all I can add to that today is a very sweaty, Amen.
