This weeks show turns an eye towards THE GOOD GUYS and THE BAD GUYS and the perfect interview to coincide with that as Daniel Blake Smith asks the question – What exactly is a Patriot and examines the historical truths of what was happening in The Cherokee Nation just at the advent of the event of what we know now as The Trail of Tears.

Mr. Smith shares his journey from college baseball to star to avid historian as his journey led him to writing and film-making. A warm and wonderful interview and an intimate discussion with a man who is shinning a light on hidden subjects and illuminating truth from the archives of history.

And of course – we can’t let you get away without a few cool musical interludes to set the stage so follow along as we invite the likes of Sonny & Cher, Dave Mason, Mumford and Sons, and some guy named Beethoven join us for a little storytelling magic.

The Author

Daniel Blake Smith is a writer and filmmaker who loves to tell true, compelling American stories. Raised in the north Texas town of Wolfe City and educated at Oklahoma State University and the University of Virginia (where he received his doctorate in American history), Smith is the author of three books, most recently a stirring narrative account about early Virginia, The Shipwreck that Saved Jamestown, and a new book about the internal struggles in Indian country that culminated in the epic tragedy of forced removal, An American Betrayal: Cherokee Patriots and the Trail of Tears.

Many of Smith’s films likewise focus on powerful, pivotal moments in our nation’s past: he wrote and coproduced ”February One,” a documentary about the 1960 Greensboro, North Carolina, lunch counter sit-in that helped launch the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. “February One” aired nationally on PBS’s ‘Independent Lens.’ He also wrote two prize-winning documentaries (both narrated by film star James Earl Jones) about native American life: “Cherokee Legacy: The Trail of Tears,” and “Black Indians: An American Story.” Smith’s documentary biopic about Edgar Allan Poe (“Terror of the Soul”), starring John Heard and Treat Williams with music by Philip Glass, aired on PBS’s “American Masters” series. Smith’s documentary history of Kentucky, narrated by Ashley Judd, “Kentucky—An American Story,” aired in May 2011 on Kentucky Educational Television.

Smith’s current film work includes a variety of documentary and dramatic feature projects in development. He is the writer/producer of “The Phoenix,” a true dramatic story of courage and recovery. “Blood Born” is a medical thriller about how a remarkable discovery transforms a man’s life—and those around him. Smith is writer/producer for “Impact: After the Crash,” a feature documentary about the 1988 Carrolton, Kentucky, bus crash—the worst drunk-driving accident in U.S. history.

An American Betrayal: Cherokee Patriots and the Trail of Tears

Hear the interview with Macmillan/Henry Holt

The fierce battle over identity and patriotism within Cherokee culture that took place in the years surrounding the Trail of Tears.

“An American Betrayal: Cherokee Patriots and the Trail of Tears,” written by Daniel Blake Smith, explores the pervasive effects of the tribe’s uprooting that have never been examined in detail. Despite the Cherokees’ efforts to assimilate with the dominant white culture—running their own newspaper, ratifying a constitution based on that of the United States—they were never able to integrate fully with white men in the New World.

Daniel Blake Smith’s vivid prose brings to life a host of memorable characters: the veteran Indian-fighter Andrew Jackson, who adopted a young Indian boy into his home; Chief John Ross, only one-eighth Cherokee, who commanded the loyalty of most Cherokees because of his relentless effort to remain on their native soil; most dramatically, the dissenters in Cherokee country—especially Elias Boudinot and John Ridge, gifted young men who were educated in a New England academy but whose marriages to local white girls erupted in racial epithets, effigy burnings, and the closing of the school.

Smith, an award-winning historian, offers an eye-opening view of why neither assimilation nor Cherokee independence could succeed in Jacksonian America.

The true tales from an insider’s perspective in the know. A great chat with that Bookseller Around the Corner, That Bookstore in Blytheville, and some Lit Chat news and great Musical Interludes. N.M.Kelby is also the author of The Constant Art of Being A Writer: The Life, Art & Business of Fiction (Writer’s Digest Books), the story collection, A Travel Guide for Reckless Hearts (Borealis Books) and the novels Murder at the Bad Girl’s Bar and GrillWhale SeasonIn the Company of Angels, and Theater of the Stars. Her work has won numerous awards including a Gold Medal from the Florida Book Awards, has been translated into several languages, and offered by The Literary Guild, Doubleday Book Club, and Quality Paperback Book Club. She is the recipient of a Bush Artist Fellowship in Literature, an NEA Inter-Arts grant, the Heekin Group Foundation’s James Fellowship for the Novel, both a Florida and Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship in fiction, two Jerome Travel Study Grants, and a Jewish Arts Endowment Fellowship.

Her story “Jubilation, Florida” was selected for NPR’S “Selected Shorts,” and recorded by Joanne Woodward for the CD Travel Tales, and reprinted in New Stories from the South: Best of 2006 (Algonquin Books).
A breathtaking novel, rare and moving, about the world’s greatest chef and his unruly heart.

White Truffles in Winter imagines the world of the remarkable French chef Auguste Escoffier (1846-1935), who changed how we eat through his legendary restaurants at the Savoy and the Ritz. A man of contradictions—kind yet imperious, food-obsessed yet rarely hungry—Escoffier was also torn between two women: the famous, beautiful, and reckless actress Sarah Bernhardt and his wife, the independent and sublime poet Delphine Daffis, who refused ever to leave Monte Carlo. In the last year of Escoffier’s life, in the middle of writing his memoirs, he has returned to Delphine, who requests a dish in her name as he has honored Bernhardt, Queen Victoria, and many others. How does one define the complexity of love on a single plate? N. M. Kelby brings us the sensuality of food and love amid a world on the verge of war in this work that shimmers with beauty and longing.

What People Are Saying About Cheap Cabernet

What They’re Saying About Cheap Cabernet

Cathie Beck’s “Cheap Cabernet” is a vintage tale, a female buddy story chock full of the stuff of life: tears, laughter and love in the darkest of times. You won’t put it down until the final page — at which time a box of Kleenex and a glass of cabernet, cheap or otherwise, would be wise to have on hand: the first to deal with the story’s denouement, the second to toast Beck’s triumph.

Cheap Cabernet is simply awesome, such a poignant story, and so very well-written.

—  Patti Thorn, books editor,
Rocky Mountain News

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Some friendships survive beyond the final gruesome fight. Some last beyond the grave. Cathie Beck had that kind of friendship and she relates the roller coaster ride of that relationship in her memoir with a heavy dose of wit and a wine glass full of poignant reflection.

Beck’s writing is breezy, polished, and fun to read. Her vivacious personality comes alive on the page and draws readers into her world.

 ForeWord Reviews

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Cathie Beck’s wonderfully told and achingly poignant memoir will remind every woman to call her best friend right away to tell her how important their relationship is, and how she couldn’t survive without it  And, by the way, to run out and buy the heartbreaking book, “Cheap Cabernet.”

— Iris Rainer Dart, author of Beaches

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

All [of the chapters describing Cathie’s life and friendship with Denise] are sharply focused and grip the reader’s attention. . . . Compelling as both an account of a special friendship and, more generally, of the dynamics of women’s lives and relationships.

— The Washington Times

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The book is beautifully written and I could not put it down … what an adventure … this book will be read by many people. … and will make the rounds and stimulate some wonderful conversation about friendship, surviving the rough times and enjoying the hell out of the good times.

— Susan Gatschet-Reese, host, “Mid-Morning Jazz”,
KUVO Radio

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Beyond wonderful — wickedly funny, poignant, and smart.

Anyone who’s a fan of Mary Karr or Annie Lamott will find Cathie Beck’s “Cheap Cabernet” both laugh-out-loud hysterical — and heartbreaking.”

— Best selling author, Elle Newmark,
The Book of Unholy Mischief

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Cheap Cabernet is utterly seductive … a page-turner … impossible to put down.

Not since “Thelma & Louise” have women and friendship been so beautifully and powerfully painted. This hilarious, heartbreaking memoir is a joyful and exhilarating ride for the reader.”

— Sandi Gelles-Cole, host “Ask the Book Doctor”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Cathie Beck’s Cheap Cabernet is a bracing story of a woman who took the crappy hand life had dealt her and turned it into a big win. With an awe-inspiring stamina, she kept going long past the point other people — like me — would’ve quit. I devoured this empowering and very funny memoir from the first page.

— Julie Klam, author of Please Excuse My Daughter

Raised near the Television to such wonderful influences as Happy Days, Welcome Back Kotter, and China Beach – Jeffrey decided that at ten or eleven years old the best thing he might become was a screenwriter so he began banging out some ideas on an old typewriter in the basement. We must tell you, the world is all the better for the fact that he was captured by story at an early age and never walked away from it.

We’ll also visit with a That Bookseller Around the Corner, feature a New Book Review, Best Hideaway Getaway, and talk a little bit about Writer’s Notebooks and Where They Write. All mixed in of course with those great Musical Interludes.

A Little More About Jeffrey

Jeffrey Stepakoff was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received a BA in Journalism. In 1988, the day after getting his MFA in Playwriting

from Carnegie Mellon, he drove to Hollywood where he began writing for film and television.

Jeffrey has “written by” or “story by” credits on thirty-six television episodes, has written for fourteen different series and has worked on seven primetime staffs, producing hundreds of hours of internationally-recognized television, including the Emmy-winning THE WONDER YEARS, SISTERS, WILD CARD, HYPERION BAY, THE MAGIC SCHOOL, C16: FBI, ROBIN’S HOODS, LAND’S END, FLIPPER, SONS & DAUGHTERS, MAJOR DAD, THE YAKOV SMIRNOFF SHOW, BEAUTY & THE BEAST, HAVE FAITH, SIMON& SIMON, and DAWSON’S CREEK where he was Co-Executive Producer.

Stepakoff has also created and developed pilots for many of the major studios and networks, including 20th Century, Paramount, MTM, Fox and ABC. And he has developed and written major motion pictures, including Disney’s TARZAN and BROTHER BEAR, and EM Entertainment’s LAPITCH, THE LITTLE SHOEMAKER, Croatia’s selection for the 1998 Academy Awards.

A few years ago, Stepakoff returned to Atlanta, where he lives with his wife and three young children, and began writing fiction. FIREWORKS OVER TOCCOA, first published by St. Martin’s Press in 2010, is his debut novel. A Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance “Okra” Pick and an ABA Indie Next List Notable, FIREWORKS is available in hardback, trade paperback, large print, audio and digital forms. The novel was also an Avant Premiere (featured pick) for France Loisirs (the French Book club). Stepakoff’s second novel, THE ORCHARD, also a SIBA Pick, was released in North America in July 2011. READER’S DIGEST will release their version in October 2011′s SELECT EDITIONS. Stepakoff’s fiction is available in eleven languages, as well as in editions for all the major bookclubs, including The Literary Guild, Doubleday and Book-of-the-Month Club.

Presently, he speaks around the country, teaches dramatic writing at Kennesaw State University, and is hard at work on his third novel for St. Martin’s Press. In his spare time, he builds forts in living room with sofa cushions.
