Shellie Rushing Tomlinson Guesting - March 7

Friday, January 23, 2009

ALL THINGS SOUTHERN Author and Radio Host Shellie Rushing Tomlinson visits to talk writing and about her most recent book - Suck Your Stomach In and Put Some Color On!: What Southern Mamas Tell Their Daughters that the Rest of Y'all Should Know Too.

The host of All Things Southern shares the sass and strength of Southern mamas in this spunky guide to life.
In this humorous handbook, Shellie Rushing Tomlinson, host of All Things Southern, reveals the all-important lessons Southern Mamas teach their daughters. Readers will discover why blue eye shadow is trashy and learn to interpret regional dialect like the Southern Mama APB, a bulletin translated on Southern streets as: “Give your heart to Jesus, girl, because your butt is all mine!” Shellie carefully breaks down the teachings behind those famous manners and social graces through her firsthand observations and dry wit. Here’s everything you need to know from how to cope with the unexpected, compete in the Mr. Right Game Show, and raise children—to how to keep that marriage knot tied tight over time. Woven with quotes from real Southern Mamas and sprinkled with recipes and other Southern secrets, this book’s a bona-fide celebration of all things south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Of course their will be great music, great stories and great company because author Shellie Rushing Tomlinson will be dropping in to talk writing, radio and all things southern. From the back porch to a starry La. night, this woman knows what she's talking about and trust me, I just spent three days with her in Texas and she is the real deal and will keep you laughing and learning in the process.

So tune in and stay tuned - because without you there just isn't a show.

Make certain that if you are in Nashville Saturday you tune in to the show but if you are out/gone/one the road or hanging out a little coffee bar in the Netherlands you can tune in via the web at www.radiofreenashville.org

T. Lynn Ocean steps into Backstory this Saturday

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Are you ready? Okay- here it comes.

More of your great music everything from Stevie Wonder to Train to Frank Sinatra to Black Crows to . . . well you get the idea.

More great stories about the writing life, the road trip life, the writing on the road trip life. Life in general when you are working from a cubicle 9-5 or from the back of your VW Van that you're hiding off the Natchez Trace.

And more great company as T. Lynn Ocean joins us to talk about it this Saturday 4-6 central time on 98.9lpfm Nashville or www.radiofreenashville.org world wide. T. Lynn Ocean
A freelance writer for 15 years, T. Lynn Ocean's work regularly appears in regional magazines nationwide. Her novels include Fool Me Once, Sweet Home Carolina, and the first installment of a mystery adventure series, Southern Fatality, featuring unconventional security specialist Jersey Barnes. Second in the series, Southern Poison was released September 08. Southern Fatality was reprinted in mass market paperback in August 08.

When not vacuuming up pet hair, T. Lynn pretends to be a photographer, enjoys cooking, and jumps at any chance to take a road trip in the name of doing research. T. Lynn is also a shooting sports enthusiast and a certified firearms safety instructor. She lives in Myrtle Beach, SC with her husband and a few furry critters.

About Southern Poison
Men from her past keep reappearing in her life, and hard-hitting security specialist Jersey Barnes can't seem to enjoy her early retirement. This time, it's her former handler Ashton, back from when she worked for the government. There has been some high frequency chatter by a suspected terrorist cell targeting the Sunny Point Ammunitions Depot, and they want Jersey to be a set of eyes and ears.
Unwittingly thrown back in action, Jersey unveils the suspected threat but meanwhile, discovers a much larger and much more sinister plot in the works. Southern Poison moves at break-neck speed as Jersey must save herself from assassins, stop the bad guys from distributing tainted cosmetics, keep her trouble-making father and his poker buddies out of jail, investigate a budding romance, and maybe—just maybe, retire.

And for those of you going digital which is just about everyone and their brother, you can pick us up via radio just ab

out anywhere in Middle Tn and beyond.

Bestselling author Barry Eisler on the radio - 6.14.08

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Backstory features bestselling author and former CIA agent, Barry Eisler this Saturday.

Barry pulls up a chair and openly discusses the writing process, the wild success of his John Rain series, the new movie in the works, and the political landscape in this election year.

Here's a little on the latest book from ET:
"Once upon a time, things were easy for John Rain. Or as easy as life could be for an assassin. Yet now, in his sixth outing, Rain's formed too many attachments, and they're causing him grief. His pal—a Marine sniper named Dox—has been kidnapped. Unless Rain extinguishes three specific people in a short amount of time, Dox is a goner. Meanwhile, Rain's girl, Delilah, is urging him to give up his deadly and itinerant life, the only one he's known. With a mix of nifty black-ops scenes and moments of emotional explosiveness, Eisler proves himself to be as coolly efficient a writer as his protagonist is a killer." —Entertainment Weekly

For aspiring writers I highly recommend that you visit Barry's site and check out his informative words of wisdom and list of links. I think that its one of the snazziest writer/reader sites out there and with plenty of photos for those who love to travel vicariously.

More great music with everything from George Jones to Gov't Mule, more great stories, and great company. Now what a great way to spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon!

N.M. Kelby visits this Saturday 5.24.08

Friday, May 23, 2008

N.M. Kelby and I have bumped into one another from time to time as book writers enter the book pushers stage and begin to emerge from that dark tunnel of writing to PROMOTE said book . Now, fortunately for all of us, N. M. Kelby has emerged in a tour-de-force known as MURDER at the BAD GIRLS' BAR AND GRILL. Publisher's Weekly declares "Lyrical prose and Technicolor characters life Kelby's amusing, unconventional mystery set at a gated Florida beach community plagued by murder and mayhem . . . Along the way, Kelby offers some unexpected wisdom.

It's Carl Hiaasen meets Gabrial Garcia Lorca in a weird and wonderful romp through the humid days and nights of a Florida that gives us charaters and mystery abounding.
All that and a poem of Maya Angelo's - read by Maya Angelo, a great hot spot to hang your hat right now if you're longing to get away to write, and songmeisters crooning, bopping, and rock and rolling. A Saturday well spent in the company of the things you love - Great Stories, Great Music, and Great Company! 4-6pm Central Time.

Ron Hogan Live on BACKSTORY, Saturday, 5, 2008

Friday, April 4, 2008

Okay, so this past Sunday I grab a NY Times Sunday edition and dig in for some off the clock reading time. Imagine my no big surprise when I'm reading a major ariticle about how many blogs are now turning into lucrative book contracts and they are interviewing Ron Hogan, man on the publishing beat, to give his 3 cents take on the subject.

When I first met Ron we were in another state somewhere at an outdoor party for authors attending and presenting at that years festival. Right now, I'm pretty certain it was Virginia. Then I began to realize when Ron popped up a year later in Texas at the Pulwood Queens Girlfriend Getaway Weekend that he really was a man on a mission and was not only covering the publishing/writing business, he was literally staying in the thick of it. (Now if only I had time to dig up those pictures of Ron at the Hollywood Hairball from last year!)

So don't miss it this Saturday as Ron Hogan puts his feet up to chat awhile and be Great Company on Backstory.

He's gonna tell us about how he created Beatrice.com in 1995, making it one of the oldest continuously running literary websites on the Internet. He also writes about the business side of publishing at GalleyCat.

He speaks frequently at book festivals and industry conferences, to both aspiring and published authors, about the bookblog phenomenon and other transformative trends in book publishing. Newspapers and magazines also call upon him to discuss such issues:

He is the author of The Stewardess Is Flying the Plane, a visual tribute to '70s Hollywood Publishers Weekly called "one of the year's most fun" coffee table books when it was published in 2005. He also contributed to the New York Times bestseller Not Quite What I Was Planning.

He has published an e-book of his "translation" of the Tao Te Ching that is downloaded by more than 25,000 readers a year in various formats.

More Great Music, Great Stories, and Great Company on Backstory this Saturday! Tune in at 98.9fm in Nashville, Comcast SAP Channel 10 in Davidson County or at www.radiofreenashville.org 4-6CST

Carolyn Haines and Jim Palmer Ride into Backstory 2/23

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

Okay - are you ready to meet one of those authors who writes in multiple genres, multiple pen names, and manages to win awards across the board? Well, I know I am and I can't wait for Carolyn Haines to tell us how she keeps it straight and makes it look so easy! Haines is a multi-genre author whose latest work, Revenant, is a finalist for best contemporary mystery in the Romantic Times awards. Fever Moon, a historical thriller released this year, is a Book Sense notable book, and Ham Bones, the seventh in the Mississippi Delta Mystery series, was a best-seller on the Ingrams list and the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association list.

She is a contributor to the anthology, Many Bloody Returns, which hit the New York Times bestseller list this fall. She is the author of Bones to Pick, Hallowed Bones, Crossed Bones, Splintered Bones, Buried Bones, Them Bones—mysteries all set in the Mississippi Delta. Wishbones is set for release July, 2008.Touched and Summer of the Redeemers, two general fiction novels, have been reissued in trade paperback. Her first non-fiction book, My Mother’s Witness: The Peggy Morgan Story (River City Publishing), tells the story of a woman who testified against Byron De La Beckwith. Writing under the pseudonym Caroline Burnes, she has written thirty-eight Harlequin Intrigues, many of them featuring Familiar, the black cat detective. The author was awarded a 1998 writing fellowship by the Alabama State Arts Council. Her books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Haines is a native of Mississippi, but she makes her home in Semmes and teaches the graduate and undergraduate fiction writing classes at the University of South Alabama.

And if you ever wondered how God somehow wandered into a predictable, sensible box and stayed there, then check in with us as Jim Palmer talks about his revelations that led him to write Divine Nobodies. Truth is, I like anybody right up front that comes up with that title.

Jim Palmer.

Palmer's widely acclaimed first book, Divine Nobodies, earned him widespread acclaim as one of our next great spiritual writers - a writer of emotional depth, self-deprecating humor, gifted storytelling, and profound insight. In his next book Wide Open Spaces, Jim strikes to the heart, calling readers to consider whether their neatly constructed concepts of God haven’t prevented them from experiencing the awe-inspiring depths of God himself. He is the founder of the Pilgrimage Project, an initiative encouraging the freedom to imagine, dialogue, live, and express new possibilities for being an authentic Christian and he's willing and able to tell us just what all that means.

Add in a visit with a 'Dead Guy', a few updates on writerly happenings in Nashville and around the world, and some of the best, electic music mix you'll hear anywhere and you've got another Backstory show worth waiting for. Set your clocks and put your feet up and get snappy - it's Saturday.

Great music, great stories, and great company.

Tune in live at 98.9fm Nashville, *SAP Channel 10, Davidson County, and through Radio Free Nashville live linked world-wide.
